Evo Morales Calls Chile to Dialogue after ICJ Ruling

Evo Morales Calls Chile to Dialogue after ICJ Ruling

La Paz, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian president, Evo Morales, called today the Chilean government to dialogue on his countryâÖs claim to a sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean, after the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of The Hague was announced.
About one hour later the ICJ concluded it had competence to rule over the litigation between La Paz and Santiago, Morales insisted that

Bolivia is a peaceful country and calle don Chile to negotiate.

âWe are a country of peace. We are a State of dialogue and called on the Chilean government to accompany this process through dialogue. The ICJ already showed the way, because we were convinced of its competenceâÖ, commented in a press conference from Palacio Quemado, venue of the Executive.

âI want to greet the social organizations of Chile, intellectuals, professionals, artists, who expressed their support and the letters that keep coming, notes, messages of the Chilean people, because this injustice was not provoked by the Chilean people, but by transnational interestsâÖ, said the President referring to the invasión of 1879.

UN court rules it can hear Bolivia sea dispute case
9 hours ago

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), ruled on Thursday that it has jurisdiction to continue hearing a dispute between Bolivia and Chile.

Bolivia lost 400km (240 miles) of coast to Chile in a 19th-Century war and has been landlocked ever since.

In 2013, Bolivia asked the ICJ to order Chile to negotiate Bolivia's claim to be given access to the Pacific.

Chile argued that the case did not fall under the jurisdiction of the ICJ, but the ICJ judges dismissed that argument.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said it was "a day Bolivians would never forget".
