Peru to expand natural gas supply in poorest areas

Peru plans to supply natural gas to 10,000 new consumers every year in its impoverished regions, said the country's energy regulator on Monday.

"We expect about 10,000 new consumers to be incorporated each year, which will benefit homes and small businesses directly," Luis Espinoza, chief of the Peruvian Energy and Mining Regulatory Agency, was quoted by El Peruano daily as saying.

The government launched a 70-million-US dollar initiative in July to encourage state-run electricity companies to supply natural gas in Peru's poorest regions.

The government hopes that, with the help of private investment, the expanded natural gas service could help drive development in its poor regions in the long run.
