The disgraced, jailed presidents son is being investigated for illegally using public funds while mayor of Mixco.
Guatemala's attorney general has prohibited Otto Perez Molinas son from leaving the country, as he is under investigation for abusing his post as mayor and stealing money from public funds for his re-election campaign.
Otto Perez Leal was mayor of the town of Mixco, which lies just west of Guatemala City, until last Friday when he lost in the latest municipal elections.
His father Perez Molina resigned from office last September after an investigation implicating him in the la Linea customs and tax embezzlement scandal revealed in April. He is in jail awaiting prosecution. The scandal invloved over 100 officials and business people, including Perez Molinas vice president, who also was removed from office.
Perez Leal had been suspected of using public funds illegally, however he was protected by diplomatic immunity while he was in office. He is now being investigated on charges of abuse of authority with electoral purposes and illegal propaganda, and has been prohibited from leaving the country, according to local media reports.
