Advances in health care are among Cubas major achievements over the past five decades, despite the U.S. blockade.
If Cuban doctors have their way, the country will be the first in Latin America to completely wipe out tuberculosis, according to a World Health Organization plan presented Saturday.
And the island nation is already well on its way to achieving that goal. In Cuba, there are just 6.2 cases of tuberculosis per 100,000 people, well below the regional average for Latin America at over 25 cases per 100,000, according to WHO data.
Global health experts believe that at a rate of detention of about 600 cases per year, its well within Cubas reach to accept the challenge of eliminating the disease once and for all.
. . .
Cuba plans to focus on vulnerable groups, including the elderly, with efforts to monitor, test, and offer preventative health care.
