Imprisoned Peru ex-president Fujimori taken to hospital

Imprisoned Peru ex-president Fujimori taken to hospital

By AFP 1 hour ago.

Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, serving a 25-year prison term for corruption and crimes against humanity, was transferred to a hospital after experiencing high blood pressure and pain in his tongue.

The 77-year-old has been in and out of the hospital in recent months for a series of health problems.

Fujimori had "high blood pressure and severe pain in his tongue, so the prison doctor recommended that he be transferred to the hospital," prison service chief Julio Magan said.

He has previously had gastric problems, cataract surgery and five operations for a cancerous growth on his tongue.

(Of course it figures he believed his daughter, Keiko, would "spring" him when she was elected as Peru's President. He must be so disappointed, for someone who formerly used death squads freely, ruled ruthlessly, until he fled to Japan, and e-mailed his resignation to Peru, then thought he'd hide next in Chile. He needs to cool his jets a while, and ponder why he decided to force so many Native Inca women to be sterilized in their youth, rendering them incapable of giving birth for the rest of their lives. They certainly haven't forgotten. They weren't actually given a choice.)

Even Dictators Feel Sad: Peru's Fujimori Treated for Depression

Published 17 June 2016

The health problems come after Fujimori's daughter lost a close race for president.

Imprisoned ormer Peruvian dictator Alberto Fujimori has been moved from his prison cell to a clinic to undergo urgent care for high blood pressure and depression, the head of the state penitentiary institute Julio Magan said on Friday, according to Reuters.

Fujimori, 77, is serving a 25-year sentence since 2009 for graft and human rights abuses during his 1990-2000 authoritarian rule.

"He was transferred urgently," Magan said on local broadcaster RPP, saying Fujimori suffered from high blood pressure, depression and tongue pain.

Fujimori has received medical treatment outside of his prison cell several times in recent years, including for surgery to remove a growth on his tongue and cataracts in one eye.

The most recent illness follows his eldest daughter Keiko Fujimori's second straight narrow defeat in a run-off presidential election two weeks ago. Her campaign failed to fully distance herself from her father’s human rights abuses, including forced disappearances and state forced sterilization of many poor and indigenous women. Many believed Fujimori would seek to free her father if she won.

What a dirtball. He'll probably sponsor a revolution, next, to restore himself to power.
