Government and FARC to Sign Peace Deal on July 20
The Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) are set to sign a final peace agreement on July 20th, which could put an end to more than 50 years of conflict that has affected more than six million people. Any accord reached by the negotiators in Cuba will need to be confirmed by a popular consultation.
"I think that by July 20 we will have been able to close negotiations in Havana and from there a new era for the country will come," Colombian President Jose Manuel Santos stated after a Cabinet meeting Monday.
The government has been in talks in Cuba with the FARC since late 2012. They were preceded by two years of secret talks.
Thus far, the two sides have reached accords on more than half a dozen topics including agrarian reform, political participation of former rebels, curbing production and trafficking of illicit substances, and the rights of victims and transitional justice.

(160,527 posts)They probably haven't scratched the surface arresting politicians who use the paras to murder their political enemies, or butt into elections, etc.
The old AUC which claimed to demobilize merely split into many small groups with different names, like Aguilas Negras, and they're still doing the same stuff, according to human rights groups. It's going to be harder, considering the fact the US itself was responsible for organizing these paras in the beginning to fight against simple "leftist" dissidents. They became so damned powerful in the years after, and they're still in business as many small groups.
The US "news" media has NEVER had a word to say about the incredible flood of blood, and nightmares AUC death squads unleashed in Colombia. According to them, it has all been those dirty FARCS. Like anyone sane would believe that.
