Panama establishes commission to study US invasion

Panama establishes commission to study US invasion
Jul 20, 4:50 PM EDT

PANAMA CITY (AP) -- Panama has created a commission to investigate who died in the 1989 U.S. invasion that ousted strongman Manuel Noriega.

Vice President Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado said Wednesday there cannot be reconciliation until the truth is known.

The commission is being given the job of clarifying who died in the Dec. 20, 1989, invasion, investigating claims of human rights abuses and evaluating calls for a day of national mourning.

Official statistics say 314 Panamanian soldiers and 200 civilians died, but local human rights organizations estimate more than 1,000 Panamanians died. The U.S. lost 23 military personnel.

George H W Bush's Defense Dept. named it "Operation Just Cause."

Does that mean they did it "just cause" they could? It certainly wouldn't be a "just cause" considering how many innocent people were killed, taken TOTALLY by surprise, not knowing the US planned to invade them, for chrissakes.

I have long felt that Grenada and Panama were designed to get the US back on a firm war footing. Also as a Vietnam palate cleanser.

They were also useful training grounds for both the troops and some nasty new cutting edge weaponry.

These operations eventually functioned as a means to deal with former assets that had gone rogue and or outlived their usefulness...

They wanted to brush off the ick after the odious VietNam War, and show we could kill quickly without losing tens of thousands of citizens from our country in the process. Jeez.

They didn't want us to come to dislike war, isn't that thoughtful? Didn't want us to lose our appetite....

Outstanding look at Noriega. They were able to dump so much off on him, weren't they?

Wonder if Rumsfeld had any idea he was shaking hands with someone he was going to help kill. Probably.
