UN Warns about Decline of Struggle against Poverty in Brazil

UN Warns about Decline of Struggle against Poverty in Brazil

Brasilia, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Development Program Representative for Brazil, Maristela Baioni, warned today about a decline of the struggle against poverty in the South American country, due to the economic crisis.

'We have had a decline in recent years, but with the crisis, nowadays, there is a risk that the population returns to the previous poverty rates,' asserted Baioni in a business seminar held in the city of Sao Paulo.

According to the report on the Municipal Human Development Index, prepared by the UNDP and published in November, the human-development growth rate in Brazil increased from 2011 to 2014, before the country entered the current recession, compared to the previous decade.

That parameter increased from 0.738 in 2011 to 0.761 in 2014 and maintained the tendency of growth achieved in during the first 10 years of this century, especially boosted by the programs to fight poverty implemented by the Government of then President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) and his successor Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016).

The Municipal Human Development Index is an indicator that varies from zero (to which the most developed countries are close), and is shaped by three variables: education, longevity (life expectancy at birth) and the population's income.
