Ecuador election cliff-hanger: Leader near outright victory

Ecuador election cliff-hanger: Leader near outright victory

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Vote counting in Ecuador's presidential election dragged into a third day Tuesday with ruling party candidate Lenin Moreno still just short of a definitive first-round victory and supporters and opponents of outgoing President Rafael Correa trading heated accusations.

With the last ballots trickling in from Sunday's election, Moreno had a little over 39 percent of the votes and an almost 11-point lead over conservative Guillermo Lasso, a former banker who finished second in a field of nine candidates. But Moreno remained just under a point below the 40 percent threshold needed to avoid an April runoff.

It was the first time in recent memory that Ecuadorean authorities had not declared a winner on election night, leading Lasso and many of his supporters to charge that an attempt at fraud was underway as Correa's leftist movement sought to hold onto power at a time the rest of South America has shifted to the right. But Lasso's side did not present any evidence of irregularities.

In a series of Tweets Tuesday morning, Correa accused the "losers" of taking advantage of the vote-by-vote count to generate violence and talk of fraud.

the right-wing has always held power until Correa, and the right-wing is wholly supported by the US military complex.

The president was rescued from the National Police Hospital by an elite police special operations unit

Six Ecuadorean police officers have been given 12 years in jail for trying to assassinate President Rafael Correa.

The six took part in a mutiny in 2010 during which officers besieged the president at a Quito hospital.

One of Mr Correa's bodyguards was killed when the mutineers opened fire on the president's car as he finally left the hospital after 12 hours.

The police were protesting over cuts to their benefits, but the demonstrations snowballed into a full-scale mutiny.

Ecuadorian Justice found 6 police officers guilty of assassination attempt against Ecuadorian president
Saturday, 02/08/2014 - 10:22:21 AM

Quito, Aug 01 (Andes).- The Seventh Court of Criminal Guarantees of Pichincha declared six police officers, currently in active service, guilty of assassination attempt against president Rafael Correa, in the coup d'etat on September 30 of 2010 (30-S).

The Public Prosecutor accused the police officers of having shot the vehicle, with which the Chief Executive was rescued from Hospital de la Policía, the night of September 30, after having been kept for eight hours against his will.

. . .

On September 30, police officers revolted and held the President as hostage for more than ten hours inside the Police Hospital. His release was managed thanks to the Army.

The coup d'etat attempt left as a consequence 10 dead and 300 hurt people, including soldiers and civilians.

Ecuador: Right-wing coup attempt defeated

DUROYAN FERTL
Saturday, October 2, 2010

On September 30, Ecuador descended into chaos as a protest by sections of the police force and army turned into a potentially bloody coup against left-wing President Rafael Correa.

At about 8am, sections of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces and the national police went on strike, occupying police stations and barracks in the capital Quito, in Guayaquil and in at least four other cities. They set up road blocks with burning tyres, cutting off access to the capital.

They also stormed and occupied the National Assembly building and took over the runway at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport.

Schools and many businesses in Quito shut down early, as opposition protesters attempted to take over and sabotage broadcasts from television station Gama TV.

The protests were in response to a new public service law designed to harmonise income and benefits across the Ecuadorian civil service. Many police and troops, however, believed the law would remove their benefits and bonuses, as well as delay promotions.

. . .

As news got out, tens of thousands of Correa’s supporters took to the streets across the country, chanting “Correa, hang in there, the people are rising up!” and demanding that Correa be freed.

The people like Trump are the ones who have been exploiting and interfering in Latin American lives from the first.
The right-wing IS the racist, fascist, murderous, relentlessly greedy and evil elite which has always been scheming, terrorizing, and intimidating the vast indigenous and mixed race impoverished public.
