meztli-ixtli-co Mexico

The generally accepted meaning of the nahuatl word México is "the belly button of the moon" derived from the words meztli (moon), ixtli (belly button) and co (place): mezixtlico.

Thank you for introducing us to thinking about nahuatl words. So many words in the US are derived from nahuatl, and so many of us don't know about it. To learn the origin makes the world that very much more important. So much to learn, so little time, and it's so worth while.
