Noam Chomsky Visits Brazils Former President Lula in Prison
SEP 21, 2018
in news from Brazil, the world renowned dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky met with Brazils imprisoned former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday. This comes a week after Lula officially pulled out of next months presidential race. Lula has been jailed since April. Speaking outside the prison after his visit, Noam Chomsky condemned the right-wing media in Brazil.
Noam Chomsky: We had just had the great privilege of spending an hour with Lula, and one of the points that he emphasized was that during his entire tenure in office, there was just a constant flood of attacks from all the media, constantly. A thousand attacks from every direction, which of course, confuses and undermines public opinion. So the answer to your question is, something is needed to counter the concentrated power of right-wing media, which particularly in Latin America, just overwhelms everything.

Chomsky: Brazil Must Follow Lula Order to Be Southern Colossus
Published 21 September 2018 (7 hours 5 minutes ago)
On Thursday, famous linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky visited former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who, he said, is "optimistic about the future."
Chomsky made the remark during a press conference in Curitiba, following a visit with Lula. "It was a wonderful experience, not every day [one meets] an extraordinary figure of the 21st century [who] by right should be the next president of Brazil," said at a Free Lula vigil.
"I was very pleased to see that he continues to be animated, energetic, full of plans and programs and optimistic about the future," the famous left-wing activist and professor at the Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT) said.
During Thursday's press conference, a message from Lula to the Workers Party (PT) regarding the organization's militancy was revealed. Lula suggested that the PT has to promote peace walks in the whole country, to show that Brazil's problems will be solved with schools, museums, jobs and opportunities for the people, and not by violence and authoritarianism.

I think the journalists, firemen and opposition politicians imprisoned in the squalid confines of the Helicoide could use some sympathetic American visitors.
