Mexico Supreme Court says ban on recreational marijuana unconstitutional

Mexico's Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that an absolute ban on recreational use of marijuana was unconstitutional, effectively leaving it to lawmakers to regulate consumption of the drug.

Announcing it had found in favor of two legal challenges filed against prohibition of recreational marijuana use, Mexico's top court crossed the threshold needed to create jurisprudence: five similar rulings on the matter.

That creates a precedent other Mexican courts will have to follow.

"This is a historic day," Fernando Belaunzaran, an advocate of drug reform and member of the opposition leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), said.

The Supreme Court made its first ruling to allow a group of people to grow marijuana for personal use in November 2015.

on the violence surrounding the drug trade is follow Portugal's lead. They treat drug use as a public health issue rather than a criminal issue. This allowed for finding to be focused on treatment rather than prosecution.

just as removing prohibition did for the United States citizens.

What a wise move.

Makes one wonder what the hold-up is here, doesn't it?

Thanks for the good news.

Further south in Brazil, on the other hand, Bolsonazi and his pet judge, Moro, are planning to recriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. Colombia is as well, I understand.

They've learned well from the Heritage Foundation: Draconian drug laws are the perfect way to impose a state of siege, without the inconvenience and bad press that comes with actually declaring one.

Along with reinstating their states of siege, comes mega money hand-outs via US government of hard-earned, involuntary US tax dollars.

Gravy train time. Be our guests. Clearly we all know where that goes, and it has nothing at all to do with improving the well-being of the impoverished, suffering people who struggle for slave wages from multi-nationals.

My, my. What a woild. Duque, Bolsonaro, Macri, Pinero, Moreno, Benítez, with the powerful ubiquitous Colorado Party, always in power, except for several years with Lugo, and then Central by god America.

They will be crushed into the mud, in time. I can't wait.

Heritage Foundation is composed of relics from the Industrial Revolution when the Greed Barons had no laws to cramp their style. They want that world back now. MAGA. Loathesome, wealthy parasites. Not one of them will ever improve any part of this world. They don't intend to help others.

Gotta hope this is the lowest they can go and they will be stopped.

So glad you acquire information on such a large scale. Don't know how you do it! I feel grateful for all the depth you have added to DU's awareness for those who sincerely want to know.

Thank you, sandensea.
