A senior Colombian government official said the country would be willing to support Brazil if it decides to carry out a military intervention against President Nicolás Maduro.

"If Jair Bolsonaro helped to overthrow Maduro with military intervention, he would have the support of Colombia," said a senior government official led by President Iván Duque to La Folha de São Paulo.

He said that Colombia is afraid to take the first step in an action of this degree, but said that this country never stopped considering it. "If it is Donald Trump or Bolsonaro who first placed his feet in Venezuela to overthrow Maduro, Colombia would go without hesitation," he said.

The same source explained that they are in negotiation processes at the consular level with Argentina and Chile, who have been reluctant to the idea. They also considered the support of the United States in the case.

"Duque is confident that, with this operation in progress with Brazil, Colombia and perhaps the United States involved, Argentina and Chile could participate in some way. The region can not withstand the aggravations of the Venezuelan diaspora, "he said.

The declarations of this politician, who maintained his identity in anonymity, were public after Jair Bolsonaro was elected as president of Brazil. The president-elect to lead this country until 2022 has demonstrated its differences with Venezuela's policies, as well as highlighting the fact that the Brazilian entity has been affected by the diaspora of Venezuelans.

Bad idea

1. Why put one non-Venezuelan at risk in overthrowing Maduro? The Chavistas are doing all the hard work themselves! They are making it easy for El Pueblo to hate Chavismo. Sending in the troops would only give the Chavists the least bit of legitimacy.

2. The Chavistas are looking for an out. I don't doubt for one second that Maduro et al. would be willing to instigate a military intervention. Naturally, they wouldn't try anything against Colombia or Brazil... each having well trained, combat proven (Colombia) and large (Brazil) militaries that would hand Venezuela (never seen battle in 150 years) its own ass. But they might try a land grab with Guyana, whose military consists of 5 guys in the local credit union.
