US navy hospital ship stokes tensions by giving Venezuelan refugees free care

USNS Comfort, moored off Colombia, will help patients as pressure builds on relationship between Washington and Caracas

A US navy hospital ship moored off Colombia has started giving free medical care to Venezuelan refugees, in a move likely to rile officials in Caracas who deny the existence of a humanitarian crisis in their own country – and have long been suspicious of the close relationship between Colombia and the US.

As well as treating Colombians, US medical teams aboard the USNS Comfort will attend to Venezuelan refugees, particularly at the ship’s next stop in Riohacha, a city near the border between the two countries.

Some 3 million Venezuelans have fled political turmoil and economic hardship at home, including 1 million who have taken shelter in Colombia, which has struggled to deal with the exodus.

Last week, authorities in the the country’s capital Bogotá opened the first refugee camp to house nearly 500 Venezuelans.

1. And the Chavista alternative is... nothing

This explains itself and at the same time explains the situation we are in and the worst where we can go

If the previous letter was bad, this is a little worse, the only good thing is that by signing we know who is who ....

Translation of above letters: The director of the hospital has made it very clear that no donations are to be accepted by any public hospital. Doctors Without Borders has been refused with their gift of medical supplies on the reasoning that Venezuela doesn't need such supplies. It is offensive to Chavismo. To accept such supplies would be an admission that Chavismo is a failure.

Naturally, these supplies will be offered to various private hospitals, which will gladly accept them. That is when the Chavists will confiscate these supplies and put them to use in their public hospitals. See? Chavismo isn't a failure! Chavismo always provides!
