Colombia's medical community calls on governors to ignore Duque's plans to lift quarantine

by Adriaan Alsema April 17, 2020

Colombia’s government said it would lift a quarantine in place to slow down the spread of the coronavirus citing faulty statistics and twisting the words of a leading scientist.

President Ivan Duque and Health Minister Fernando Ruiz used the president’s Facebook broadcast to announce the relaxation of the restrictions on April 27 only to increase tensions.

Ruiz cited Imperial College epidemiologist Zulma Cucunuba to claim that “given the results in the transmission rate that we have in Colombia we can say that we are already in a ‘stage of suppression.”

Such “stage of suppression” would allow the lifting of restriction of the economic activity of those who can’t work from home.
