Brazil Worsens Ranking in Impunity of Journalist Murders

With 15 murders in the last decade, the country went from ninth to eighth place

In 2020, Brazil moved up a position in the annual ranking of countries with the greatest impunity in homicide cases of journalists. According to a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the country went from ninth place in 2019 to eighth place this year.

With 15 unsolved murders of media professionals in the past decade, Brazil ranks worse than Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Russia - respectively ninth, tenth, and eleventh on the list. Vladimir Putin's country has a history of arresting, fining, or poisoning reporters and communicators who cover against government interests.

The ranking position is calculated by dividing the number of unpunished cases by the country's population. Thus, Brazil is considered a country with greater impunity than India, for example, which failed to punish 17 murders in the last decade, but has 1.3 billion inhabitants.
