Sangay volcano (Ecuador): strong eruption sends lava fountains hundreds of meters into the sky

Activity has increased at the volcano last night and produced a paroxysm, a lava fountaining episode, which was observed from the summit. Continuous incandescent jets of lava were seen to reach estimated 500-1000 m above the summit crater.
An ash plume rose to estimated 24,000 ft (7 km) altitude and drifted east-southeast. No injuries or significant have been reported, but ash fall is affecting downwind areas east of the volcano.
