MEXICO CITY (AP) — One of the notorious Arellano Felix brothers has been deported from the United States back to Mexico after serving most of a 15-year prison sentence.

But he was promptly re-arrested when he arrived in his homeland Monday. He is being held on organized crime charges in Mexico.

He was one of several brothers who founded the Tijuana-based Arellano Felix cartel that moved hundreds of tons of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico and Colombia into the United States.

But the family slowly lost its grip along California’s border with Mexico over the past decade, while the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels emerged as the most powerful groups in the highly coveted corridor for moving drugs to the United States.

Wikipedia:

Eduardo Arellano Félix (born October 11, 1956) is a Mexican drug trafficker, brother of Benjamín, Ramón, Javier and sister Enedina, all drug traffickers. The Arellano-Félix Organization, also known as the Tijuana Cartel, has been responsible for numerous murders and the smuggling of thousands of tons of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine for more than a decade. The DEA believes that the Arellano-Félix brothers were responsible for the numerous smuggling tunnels that were found in January 2006.

Arellano is believed to be one of the most sophisticated brothers and had taken control of the cartel. He was wanted by Mexican and United States authorities in connection with the smuggling of several tons of marijuana and cocaine from Mexico into the U.S. each year. He and his sister Enedina Arellano Félix became the leaders of the drug cartel after their brother Javier Arellano Félix was arrested by U.S. authorities in Baja California on August 16, 2006.[2] His brother Ramón Arellano Félix, believed to be the most ruthless member, was eventually killed in a Mazatlán shootout with the Federal Police in February 2002. His other brother Benjamín Arellano Félix, "the mastermind", was arrested in March 2002.

Kingpin Act sanction
On 1 June 2004, the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned Arellano Félix under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act (sometimes referred to simply as the "Kingpin Act&quot , for his involvement in drug trafficking along with nine other international criminals and two entities.[3] The act prohibited U.S. citizens and companies from doing any kind of business activity with him, and virtually froze all his assets in the U.S.[4]

Arrest
Arellano was captured by the Mexican Federal Police after a shootout in Tijuana, Baja California, on October 26, 2008.[2] Eduardo was sought by Interpol in 180 countries, and the U.S. State Department had been offering US$5,000,000 for information leading to his arrest.[1] Eduardo Arellano Félix was charged in the U.S. Southern District of California with conspiracy to import cocaine and marijuana.

Authorities say Arellano did not go down without a fight, despite having his 11-year-old daughter near him. On the same day, the Mexican military also arrested other alleged lieutenant of the Tijuana Cartel in a separate incident: Luis Ramirez Vázquez, known as El Güero Camarón, or The Blond Shrimp. Although the arrests were blows to the Arellano Félix cartel it did not dismantle the organization, which is now being led by Eduardo's nephew, Luis Fernando Sánchez Arellano.[2][5]

Arellano Felix Cartel Leader Captured In Tijuana
Tuesday, June 24, 2014

By KPBS Staff

The leader of what is left of the once-powerful Arellano Felix drug cartel has been captured in Tijuana.

A poster released by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2009 seeks information related to the Arellano-Felix organization.

Fernando "El Ingeniero" Sanchez Arellano was arrested Monday afternoon by the Mexican Army, according to BBC News.

The British news agency says the capture was timed with the World Cup match between Mexico and Croatia. Arellano was dining with his family while watching the game, U-T San Diego reports.

According to the newspaper:

One U.S. official familiar with the operation said that Arellano was arrested while in the company of his wife and child at a Tijuana fast food restaurant, apparently after watching the World Cup game of Mexico versus Croatia. At the time of his arrest, Arellano was wearing a team shirt and had his face painted with the team’s colors, one source said.

The Arellano Felix cartel was a long-time rival of the Sinaloa cartel, until Sanchez Arellano formed a truce with its boss, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Guzman was captured in Mexico earlier this year.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for Southern California confirmed on Tuesday the capture of Sanchez Arellano.

“We were very pleased to hear of the arrest by Mexican authorities of Fernando Sanchez Arellano," U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said in a statement on Tuesday. "While he is not charged in our district, in recent years we have successfully prosecuted numerous members of that drug trafficking organization, which we have described as a violent racketeering enterprise responsible for murders, kidnappings and other crimes.”

Mexico cartel boss Arellano Felix jailed for 25 years
Published 2 April 2012

Benjamin Arellano Felix's cartel brought in hundreds of millions of dollars

Former Mexican drug cartel boss Benjamin Arellano Felix has been jailed for 25 years by a US judge.

Felix, 58, considered one of the world's most powerful drug lords in the 1990s, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and racketeering.

As part of the sentencing, he must also forfeit $100m (£62m).

He pleaded guilty in December. Prosecutors said his Tijuana-based cartel smuggled hundreds of tons of marijuana and cocaine into California.

The Tijuana-based cartel, known as the Arellano Felix Organisation, smuggled along the Mexico-California border.

According to court documents his cartel tortured and killed rivals in the US and Mexico.

Its operatives were known for dissolving the bodies of cartel enemies in vats of deadly corrosives.
