USA wants govt transition in Venezuela as per Constitution

USA wants govt transition in Venezuela as per Constitution
3 January 2013
Press Trust of India

WASHINGTON, 3 JAN: The US has said that it favoured any change in Venezuela's leadership as per that country's Constitution if Hugo Chavez cannot carry out his duties as President.

“We want to see any transition take place in a manner that is consistent with the Venezuelan Constitution, that any election be fully transparent, democratic, free and fair,” state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said yesterday.

Her comments came just days after the Speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly hinted the adjournment of Mr Chavez's inauguration date for his fourth term due to his illness.

Asked if Mr Chavez being out of the picture would make it easier to improve long-strained ties between Venezuela and the US, Ms Nuland said, “Obviously we will judge our ability to improve our relationship with Venezuela based on steps they are able to take.”

Why not just hit them over the head with the Monroe Doctrine, that's democracy for ya.

would you have preferred something different? I guess they could have said its their country and they should just make it up as they go along. We already see that is what they are doing now. Its their country. None of our business.

Seriously, that would be the other valid option. The US wouldn't suggest they defy their constitution.

Chávez is not Venezuela. The country will still keep going after his death (which will likely be this very year).

...is encouraging. They really have no business pointing out the obvious.

Particularly because the opposition is refraining from calling it what it is.

Hell, the person "suing" was a top level chavista TV personality who never even mentioned Article 234 in her lawsuit (it was all planned). 234 is the article that is most damning to the homophobic bigot Maduro.

It's going to be interesting if Cabello uses this to his advantage later on and I await to see what happens, because there won't be a lot of happy chavistas here.

The arrogance is simply stunning. No doubt our Government would prefer an old style Dictator we love so much. But Chavez did such a good job of showing his people what democracy looks like that it's going to be difficult for the US to install one of our own puppets there for a while, at least without them pretending to support Chavez's policies as happened in the latest election there. But the people were not fooled, thankfully.

A true Democratic leader seems to offend the US.

And how thoroughly disappointing that this Dem administration continues the horrible Right Wing policies of the last Administration in Venezuela. Truly disturbing.
