Colombian farmers -and Ecuador- welcome court decision against aerial fumigation of coca crops

Human rights groups and politicians in Colombia have welcomed a decision by the country’s Constitutional Court which ruled this week that the government failed to consult local communities over its plan to restart aerial fumigation of coca crops.

The U.S. is pressuring Colombia to resume aerial spraying of coca crops. Coca is the base ingredient of cocaine and is grown widely around Colombia, mostly by poor farmers. Much of it is grown in southern Colombian, near the Ecuadorian border.

In a decision on Wednesday, the court said the government of President Ivan Duque could not at this stage move forward with plans to carry out aerial spraying with herbicide glyphosate. It said Bogota must first adequately consult with communities that could be affected.

The decision was also welcomed by Ecuador which worried that a resumption of spraying would violate a 2015 agreement banning the practice within three kilometers of the the Ecuuadorian-Colombian border.
