HAVANA, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Cuba will send nearly 500 doctors to the Calabria region of southern Italy, Cuban state media reported this week, part of a broader program that sends surplus medics from the communist-run island to countries in need.

State-run media outlet Cubadebate said Calabria had been suffering a shortage of doctors since 2010, part of a countrywide healthcare crisis, and had been unable to fill the need any other way.

"All the regions are trying their best to hire doctors but are not finding any," Cubadebate cited Calabrian President Roberto Occhiuto as saying. "This problem is much more serious in Calabria."

. . .

Cuba will send 497 doctors of various specialties to the region in the coming months, beginning in September, Cubadebate reported.

These Cuban Drs who volunteer for foreign service are very brave.

4. They are definitely braver than physicians in other poor countries, and clearly more principled.

The poor population in so many poor countries are ignored by private physicians and there are no resources available for assisting poor sick people.

Don't know if you were following Honduras' forced coup in 2009 (where U.S. Congresswoman (Cuban exile) Ileana Ros-Lehtinen showed up immediately to show US right-wing approval of Zelaya's overthrow) but one of the very first things accomplished by the interim government with dirtbag Roberto Micheletti was shutting down the clinic for the poor which had served them previously. Figures, doesn't it? Here's a photo of the lovely Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen who was waiting with baited breath to be the first to congratulate the wildly corrupt oligarchy's triumph nearly as soon as the military kidnapped Zelaya and dumped him out, wearing only his pajamas, on the runway of the airport in Costa Rica:

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen shows Michelleti how to run a more profitable country (for the oligarchs, that is. )

Rather than supporting RW govt's.

Cuba has more Drs per capita than most western nations, with more graduating every year and without debt.

Bravo Cuba!

5. Who can forget, once learning about it, that Cuba gives scholarships to US American medical students

to get their medical educations in Cuba with the agreement that they will return to an impoverished area in the United States, and work with the poor US American patients for an agreed-upon period of time as payment for their degree, after which time they can take any direction they choose.

Don't know why US propaganda aficianado true believers don't take the time to see it's the same deal Cuban medical students are given, as in voluntary agreements, not slavery. There are many US physicians working in the US now to ignore, but our corporate media does a bang-up job in keeping the information unheard, unseen.

Despite the mewling from the Cubaphobes, Cuba seems to be able to manage things well enough to have universal educational and healthcare systems in place, and they're world class systems .
It seems that some consider progress like that to be "mismanagement". Even in some so-called liberal circles.

designed to make life so painful for the great majority it would rise up again, to throw out the revolutionary government the revolution had created. Nothing but sadism for power display.

As it is Cuba has surpassed almost every country in the Western Hemisphere annually, with amazing achievement in low, low birth fatalities, and extraordinary longevity. All done with an appalling lack of resources.

They have every right to be so proud.

(Can even manage to create their own replacement parts for the 1950's cars they have which still work after all these years, even though the U.S. refuses to give them access to parts for their US-made cars. )
