Venezuela's vice president says he's target of assassination plot

By Daniel Wallis and Deisy Buitrago
CARACAS | Wed Jan 23, 2013 4:55pm EST

(Reuters) - Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro said unidentified groups had entered the country with the aim of assassinating him and the head of the National Assembly as President Hugo Chavez recovers from cancer in Cuba.

Maduro provided no proof of the claim, made at a rally on Wednesday to mark the end of a dictatorship in the OPEC nation 55 years ago, but he said action would be taken shortly.

"For several weeks we've been following groups that have infiltrated the country with the aim of making attempts on the life of (Assembly head) Diosdado Cabello and my own," Maduro told a crowd of red-shirted "Chavista" supporters. "They will not manage it against either of us."

First, I don't believe it, but 2nd, if it's true, its most likely another Chavista faction.

This whole thing about the bogus supreme court ruling has NOTHING to do with Left vs. Right, it has to do with a power struggle within the Chavistas.

Jose' Zelaya, Manuel Noriega, Archbishop Romero, Daniel Ortega, Salvador Allende, Fidel Castro, Jacobo Arbenz, how many others have been victims of the School of the Americas, CIA, State Department intrigue and meddling in Cental and South America. 2003 saw a thwarted coup against Hugo Chavez. Maduro is right to keep up his guard.

3. He would be crazy NOT to keep up his guard. Clearly he's aware of history all around him.

There's no way anyone other than a right-winger would scoff at it.

Maduro doesn't deserve this plausible concern and all the worse if it's in any way funded by US money.

Venezuela VP: Plot Against Chavez Allies Revealed
By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER and FABIOLA SANCHEZ Associated Press
CARACAS, Venezuela January 24, 2013 (AP)

Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro said Wednesday the government has uncovered a plot to assassinate him and National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello.

"For some weeks we've been following groups that have infiltrated in the country and have the goal of trying to kill comrade Diosdado Cabello and me," said Maduro, speaking to a crowd of government supporters.

"For that reason, they've said that we're fighting because their macabre and criminal move is to make attempts against our lives — something they won't achieve — and later on try to blame one or the other," he added.

Maduro referred to the alleged plot after announcing he would travel to Cuba on Wednesday along with Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez to see the ailing Chavez, who underwent cancer surgery more than six weeks ago. The vice president didn't provide any evidence or say what sort of attacks the authorities believed to have been planned.

Plot 'targeted Venezuela leaders'
Thursday January 24 2013

A plot to assassinate leading members of Hugo Chavez's government in Venezuela has been uncovered, a minister has claimed.

Vice-president Nicolas Maduro said the government has evidence of a plot to assassinate him and National Assembly president Diosdado Cabello.

"For some weeks we've been following groups that have infiltrated in the country and have the goal of trying to kill comrade Diosdado Cabello and me," said Mr Maduro, speaking to a crowd of government supporters.

"For that reason, they've said that we're fighting because their macabre and criminal move is to make attempts against our lives - something they won't achieve - and later on try to blame one or the other," he added.
