Emotional Cristina Fernandez back in Argentina misses Chavez funeral ceremony

As world leaders were arriving at Caracas late Thursday for Friday’s funeral ceremony of President Hugo Chavez, Argentine president Cristina Fernandez and her delegation were back in Buenos Aires. The Argentine president visited the Military Hospital’s chapel Thursday noon for a final goodbye to the Venezuelan leader and then ordered the flight back to Buenos Aires.

“It was an honest and emotional homage” to a very good friend of Argentina, said Senator Anibal Fernandez who was a member of the delegation.

The Argentine president flew to Caracas as soon as she was informed of Chavez’ death Tuesday evening with a small representative delegation including her sister Giselle, her daughter Florencia and Uruguayan president Jose Mujica and First Lady Senator Lucia Topolansky.

Together with Mujica and Bolivia’s Evo Morales, they were the first heads of state to mourn as honour guard the coffin of Chavez.

Earlier in that day, Argentina’s ambassador to Venezuela, Carlos Cheppi, said that Cristina Fernández “felt an affection which went far beyond protocol with Chávez.”

Cristina Fernandez the only leader allowed to visit Chavez in hospital, but declined

Argentine president Cristina Fernandez was the only leader given the option of visiting the ailing Hugo Chavez in hospital but declined, according to Venezuelan independent journalist Nelson Bocaranda who was the first to make public the news, 19 months ago, that the charismatic leader was suffering cancer

“The Argentine president was the only one allowed to see him given the close relation of Cristina with the daughters of Chavez. Since his daughters attended president Nestor Kichner’s funeral, she was very moved and endeared to them. Cristina had the right to go in and see him with Chavez daughters but she declined because she preferred to keep the image of the Chavez she had known: a robust Chavez and not a frail and sick Chavez”, said Bocaranda who not only broke the news of the disease but has since, and despite the iron clamp on all news surrounding Chavez true health condition, has reported regularly with unquestionable accuracy events and evolution of the disease.

In an interview Bocaranda revealed the evolution of Chavez disease, which he pledged to make public only after either the leader’s full recovery or death.

“In October 2010 he was diagnosed a problem in the bladder and prostate and recommended he kept to a strict agenda which he didn’t. It was only in June 2011 that doctors detect a first abscess in his rectum with complications and diagnose cancer” said Bocaranda.

He was told to rest but to keep the (Bolivarian) revolution going and reach the election and win it, the only objective of his life, and against the will of his family, “he continued with his hectic agenda”.

It must be true.

If it is true, that's pretty shitty of her not coming to the bedside of her close friend in his time of need.

Thanks for them, Judi. It's funny that Nelson Bocaranda's account is now questioned by some DUers. Looks like the journalists from El Universal only are credible to some when they write the usual "he's a dictactor" nonsense, if not, they are just "random guys without any evidence".

Cristina kept a low-profile and was very discreet, just ignoring provocations from domestic media and going to see her friend for the last time. Definitely not her style - she's talkative and has no problems in standing up to media bullying. She certainly was very saddened with Chávez's passing.

It's especially good to know where that crap is coming from. It makes perfect sense, if unrelenting hatred and hostility around the clock can ever make sense as it seems to make sense with that "newspaper".

Didn't know the fascist media there, which served the dictatorship so faithfully, was harrassing her over that. It is completely predictable, considering their history. What a shame. Glad she went her own way, and didn't attempt to deflect their filthy tactics.

Best wishes to her, as well. She has had a lot of sorrow in her life. Hope it makes her far, far stronger, in the end. She does have good allies, hope she knows it, and takes comfort.
