Michael. Amazing how fast a lawyer can get them to learn math.

That will terrify the adjuster.

I had someone to do this to my parents a few years ago. I happen to be a lawyer, and I called the adjuster and told him that my parents were represented by legal counsel (meaning me) and that all communications needed to go through me. He didn't take me seriously and went to my parents house and tried to intimidate my mom into signing for a lower amount on the damage claim.

I called him up and said I viewed this as an ethical breach of the highest order and would pursue this as far as we needed to against him and the insurance company. Amazingly enough, he called back in a few hours and agreed to settle the matter for what the claim was for, based on written estimates we had received from contractors.

Do not let them take advantage of you.

...they are not taken seriously by the State Farms and Allstates. They BARELY take lawyers seriously, but you need one ASAP. I represent consumers in Texas, a place decidedly friendly to the monied interests. Look for someone in your area who’s board-certified in consumer law, or handles plaintiff-side insurance cases. Check your state bar’s website, or your local trial lawyer organization. You can find them on the Internet. Do not be deterred by the fee, or what you’ve been told. Your state probably has an insurance code and a deceptive trade practices act your lawyer can use for you. Often, these allow for fee shifting.

Don’t let the bastards wear you down.
