Hollyoaks: John Paul, Finn rape story to feature in police campaign

Scenes from Hollyoaks' male rape storyline are to be used by police to help raise awareness of sexual violence against men.

The Channel 4 soap aired hard-hitting episodes last week as schoolteacher John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) was sexually attacked by Finn O'Connor (Keith Rice), one of his pupils at Hollyoaks High.

The attack itself did not feature on screen, but the aftermath saw John Paul report the incident to police before attending a sexual assault referral center, where he was seen going through the process that a real-life victim would face.

Dennis Bradley, from the Leicester Gay Bisexual and Transgender Center, added: "One of the main reasons we chose to support this project is to highlight the taboo nature of male sexual violence even in today's society.

"All too often male sex violence is ignored, brushed under the carpet in both the wider, general community and the many communities of newer arrivals.

I am not familiar with this British show, but I am glad to see it is being used to discuss something that is often ignored, not only in the gay community, but in the straight community, especially when the victims (and attackers) are straight. Hopefully, this will open up an avenue for those who are survivors of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse, no matter if their attackers are someone they know, strangers, or male or female.
