(17,860 posts)Demeter was working at the polls for the Michigan primaries yesterday, so she knew she wouldn't be on line, and I think today she was taking the computer in to find out exactly what was wrong with it.
Flexeril, lots of ice, and some generic Aleve got me functioning enough to go to work today, even though I don't actually "go" anywhere. But the Flexeril makes me so sleepy I don't trust myself to drive anyway. I slept almost 18 hours Monday night, 12 last night. My normal night's sleep is 5-6 hours.

Even by Las Vegas standards, it was a shocking billboard: A mannequin dangling on a hangman's noose below a black sign with the ominous words "Dying for Work."
Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott says the 911 calls started coming in as the sun came up early Wednesday, with drivers worried the stiff, black-suited dummy swaying at the end of a rope along Interstate 15 near Bonanza Road was a real person.
"It's a publicity stunt, obviously done in bad taste," said Elliott, adding that officials were focused on getting it down quickly to avoid distracting drivers during the morning commute.
The graphic display along the interstate was one of at least two unauthorized signs spotted Wednesday morning in the Las Vegas area. Another found on Highland Avenue and Desert Inn Road was white with black lettering that read, "Hope You're Happy Wall St.," and a similar mannequin hanging off the edge.
A woman who answered the phone at Lamar Advertising Co., which owns one of the billboards, labeled the act vandalism and said the display was being removed. She did not provide her name.

(108,903 posts)On a Thursday night in May, Arpad Busson danced atop a white sofa, a cigarette in his hand, as the Pet Shop Boys performed their 1980s hit West End Girls at his annual hedge-fund charity gala in London.
The party at Kensington Palace Gardens, where guests including celebrities Eva Herzigova were entertained by female trapezists, wasnt quite as exclusive as in prior years when attendees included Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Organizers dropped the black-tie requirement at Bussons Absolute Return for Kids dinner, which raised about 15 million pounds ($23 million), little more than half the record 27 million pounds five years ago.
Busson, one of the biggest names in an industry that funnels billions of dollars to hedge funds, is finding raising cash has gotten a lot harder, and not just for charity. Underperformance in the past four years has investors doubting the value of so-called funds-of-funds as middlemen, spurring a wave of consolidation and forcing firms to redefine their business. Bussons EIM SA has lost about two-thirds of its assets since 2008, and he said it may not remain a stand-alone company.
Its more interesting for us to do something today than it was 10 years ago, Busson, who is known as Arki, said in a July 30 interview at the Woodstock, New York, home of Uma Thurman, with whom he had a baby last month. There are certain areas where we dont have a great presence, for instance in the U.S. That would be a reason to do something with a U.S. firm, he said, referring to a possible merger.

(108,903 posts)European stocks climbed for a fifth day as Nestle SA (NESN) posted sales growth that beat estimates and a report showed Chinas inflation cooled, increasing speculation that policy makers will do more to stimulate the economy. U.S. index futures and Asian shares rose.
Nestle SA, which accounts for more than 3 percent of the Stoxx Europe 600 Index (SXXP), advanced 2.6 percent as higher prices helped increase the companys revenue in Europe and the Americas. Commerzbank AG (CBK) declined 3.3 percent after forecasting that net income in the second half will be lower than in the first half.
The Stoxx 600 added 0.3 percent to 269.98 at 10:58 a.m. in London. The gauge has rallied 15 percent since its 2012 low on June 4, with nine straight weeks of gains, as policy makers eased repayment terms for Spanish lenders and optimism grew that central banks will add more stimulus. Standard & Poors 500 Index futures rose 0.2 percent and the MSCI Asia Pacific Index climbed 0.8 percent.
For some time now, investors have feared that the Chinese economy was at risk of a hard landing, given the recent weakness in economic data, said Michael Hewson, a market analyst at CMC Markets U.K. Plc. This mornings release of Chinese CPI data has reinforced speculation about further easing measures, given that inflation in July has continued its decline.

(108,903 posts)Anyone following North Korean press may have noticed the country seems to be indulging in some sort of construction boom recently. Kim Jong-un seems to be constantly opening impressive new amusement parks, and recent photos from Pyongyang showed large-scale projects and gleaming towers hitting the skyline. Then, of course, there's the rocket launches, and the rumors of another atomic bomb.
So where is the money coming from?
In an article over at Asia Times, Leonid A Petrov, a lecturer in Korean studies at the University of Sydney, points out that many experts expected the North Korean state to crumble after the fall of the USSR. Petrov writes that the country's salvation came from its incredible natural resources.
The country's mountainous regions are thought to sit on around 200 different minerals, including, crucially, a large number of rare earth metals. The total worth of these deposits is thought to be worth more than $6 trillion*.

They have done a pretty good job of neutralizing them or outright killing them since 1963. There is a reason that skin head planned, bought weaponry and walked into the Sikh temple unnoticed and the Peace Movement and Occupy have three government monitors per participant.
In the 1980-90s I used to say Americans are so stupid. Now I say most of America is insane with psychopaths in leadership positions. Because even if they are told the truth they still cannot see it and then go wreak destruction and misery on themselves, their neighbors and the World.

(108,903 posts)FRANÇOIS HOLLANDES government may be forced into deeper than expected spending cuts in the autumn after the Bank of France said the economy may be slipping back into recession for the first time in three years.
In a bleak assessment of Frances short-term prospects, the central bank said the economy was likely to fall into a shallow recession in the third quarter. The report cast doubt on the governments growth forecasts, adding to pressure on the government as it prepares a tough budget for the autumn.
Following worse than expected economic figures from Germany and Italy this week, the banks forecast for Europes second-biggest economy dampened hopes that the euro zone recovery is around the corner. European stock markets have rallied strongly in recent days amid speculation that governments and the European Central Bank will embark on concerted action in the coming weeks to relieve pressure on the currency areas weakest economies.
France emerged from its last recession defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth in the spring of 2009, and the economy has since struggled to gain momentum in the face of the euro zone debt crisis.

(108,903 posts)LOS ANGELES (AP) -- More U.S. homes started on the foreclosure path in July, as lenders tackled a backlog of mortgages gone unpaid even as they pulled back on home repossessions.
The number of homes that received an initial notice of default - the first step in the foreclosure process - increased 6 percent in July compared to the same month last year, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.
Filings of initial default notices have increased on an annual basis for three months in a row.
The trend comes as banks work to make up for time lost last year as the mortgage-lending industry grappled with allegations that it had processed foreclosures without verifying documents.

(108,903 posts)Financial markets were lackluster on Thursday - the fifth anniversary of the start of the global credit crisis - despite hopes that China's monetary authorities will do more to shore up economic growth in the world's second largest economy.
With inflation in China falling to 1.8 percent in July from the previous month's 2.2 percent, expectations are rising that Beijing may ease monetary policy to boost economic growth, which has slowed sharply this year. Separate figures on industrial production and retail sales confirmed the slowdown.
"The Chinese data release that many traders were waiting for overnight may be pointing towards a slowdown but there's seemingly little to suggest this has taken anyone by surprise," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.
In Europe, Germany's DAX was down 0.2 percent at 6,955 while the CAC-40 in France rose 0.1 percent to 3,441. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was flat at 5,847.

How Apple and Amazon Security Flaws Led to My Epic Hacking
BY MAT HONAN August 6, 2012 |
... Those security lapses are my fault, and I deeply, deeply regret them.
But what happened to me exposes vital security flaws in several customer service systems, most notably Apples and Amazons. Apple tech support gave the hackers access to my iCloud account. Amazon tech support gave them the ability to see a piece of information a partial credit card number that Apple used to release information. In short, the very four digits that Amazon considers unimportant enough to display in the clear on the web are precisely the same ones that Apple considers secure enough to perform identity verification. The disconnect exposes flaws in data management policies endemic to the entire technology industry, and points to a looming nightmare as we enter the era of cloud computing and connected devices.
This isnt just my problem. Since Friday, Aug. 3, when hackers broke into my accounts, Ive heard from other users who were compromised in the same way, at least one of whom was targeted by the same group.
Moreover, if your computers arent already cloud-connected devices, they will be soon. Apple is working hard to get all of its customers to use iCloud. Googles entire operating system is cloud-based. And Windows 8, the most cloud-centric operating system yet, will hit desktops by the tens of millions in the coming year. My experience leads me to believe that cloud-based systems need fundamentally different security measures. Password-based security mechanisms which can be cracked, reset, and socially engineered no longer suffice in the era of cloud computing ...

He has speculators cold calling him for the last few weeks trying to buy up any surplus ahead of any price hikes. His daughter lives near Ft Leonardwood MO and they are going to have to go bring her horse and bring it up here because there is no food for it anywhere near her. Expect to hear of starving horses soon.

I helped him get some hay from the feed store and haul it to the cows. When they saw us drive up, it was like kids rushing to meet the ice cream truck. I told bradah he needed to start playing turkey in the straw over the cd in the truck....We supplement their diet with feed cubes, but even those are getting pricey.
The grain for the chicken feed is going up. Fortunantly, the girls like the kitchen leftovers and there are plenty of grasshoppers, so they are actually eating less grain these days.
So many of the cattle were sold off last year that rancher's don't have much stock to work with. There were some kind ranchers and farmers that came down with emergency hay to some of the worst stricken farmers. I don't know if any of us can repay the kindness this year, it is still so bad.

(108,903 posts)Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo (on telephone) at the squatter camp in Osuna. Arrest warrants have been issued for the mayor and his followers. / CRISTINA QUICLER (AFP)
The mayor of the Seville town of Marinaleda, Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, promised on Wednesday a repeat of the extraordinary scenes he orchestrated the day before, when he led hundreds of members of the Andalusian Union of Workers (SAT) in robbing products from two supermarkets. The Robin Hood-style escapade was carried out, Sánchez Gordillo explained, because "someone has to do something so that families can eat."
The politician, who has been mayor of Marinaleda for 33 years and is also a deputy in the Andalusia regional government for the left-wing grouping United Left (IU), spent Wednesday on a Seville estate that belongs to the Ministry of Defense. Sánchez Gordillo and his supporters occupied the land just over two weeks ago.
While the media was there in force, given the furor over the supermarket thefts the day before, there was no sign of the authorities, despite the fact that the interior minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, ordered the arrest of the perpetrators of the theft.
Sánchez Gordillo did not take part in the robbery of goods at the Mercadona supermarket in Écija, but was outside the store, directing the operation with the use of a megaphone. At the same time, the general secretary of SAT, Diego Cañamero, entered a Carrefour store. Each group took around a dozen shopping carts filled with sugar, oil, milk and other staples, and left without paying.

Zoe Chace and Robert Smith are reporting from European borders this week. This is the first story in a four-part series.
A metal strip on the floor of Eurode Business Center marks the border between Germany and the Netherlands. On one side of the building, there's a German mailbox and a German policeman. On the other side, a Dutch mailbox and a Dutch policeman.
The building was supposed to make it easy to work in both countries. But it's also a reminder of how the European dream isn't yet a reality. The border is open enough that a single building can span it. No border guards, no checkpoints. But a letter sent from the German side of the building takes a week to get to the Dutch side.
A computer security company called Alunsa has offices on both sides of the building. On one side, Alunsa employees call German customers on German phones. On the other side, it's all Dutch. Raimond Potgens, the company's CEO, has two offices, one on either side of the border. He carries his laptop back and forth all day long.
The reason for all the back and forth: Taxes. "As long as Holland and Germany want all their money, it's not one union," Potgens says.
