WASHINGTON (AP) A global retirement crisis is bearing down on workers of all ages.
Spawned years before the Great Recession and the financial meltdown in 2008, the crisis was significantly worsened by those twin traumas. It will play out for decades, and its consequences will be far-reaching.
Many people will be forced to work well past the traditional retirement age of 65 to 70 or even longer. Living standards will fall, and poverty rates will rise for the elderly in wealthy countries that built safety nets for seniors after World War II. In developing countries, people's rising expectations will be frustrated if governments can't afford retirement systems to replace the tradition of children caring for aging parents.
The problems are emerging as the generation born after World War II moves into retirement.

(10,602 posts)Dems moved right to stay in power because if they ran as progressives favoring sound retirement systems they lost. And they lost because they were painted as pro communist, pro union and pro worker thugs. I know a lot of Democrats who ran as progressive pro labor candidates and lost. And they lost big.
What do you have to do to understand that you cannot vote for any GOPPER. Reagan and the GOP brought on this madness we now face. The GOP wants to end Medicare and Social Security and want to abolish retirement systems. What do workers NOT get.?

(32,017 posts)We're not doing any "bracing" here in the United States, from what I can tell. Quite the contrary, we seem to be doing everything in our power to make the situation worse. How is cutting SNAP and Social Security "bracing" for the crisis? It's not. What we're doing is exacerbating the coming crisis.

Today is the time to fight back against these "Austerity for Thee, but not for me" con artists.

(3,908 posts)rights, freedoms and securities. Stop playing GI Joe in the world to keep arm chair child-men happy by destroying with our resources rather than building. Problem solved, immediately.
We knew how to do it, know how to do it now. We fell in with the magic bean sellers. We just have to get our heads out of our asses and all start pulling in the direction that benefits the world not the 1% and this will be heaven on earth. Businesses thrived under regulation and with unions. Has anything ever gotten better with mindless deregulation? If you say phones, I've got a drone and a stolen debit card number to sell you.
If not our species was interesting but not sustainable and I don't think we get rewards in Heaven, Nirvana or Planet Whatever for screwing it all up and ignoring the basic commandments that span almost all religions.
