(21,627 posts)Although in many cases, said investigations turned out to be fig leafs or outright whitewashes.
The most notorious such case is probably that of Argentine President Mauricio Macri, who despite being found to have (through himself or immediate family) around 50 offshore accounts connected to Panama Papers, was absolved by Argentine courts in April 2017 - a year after the scandal emerged.
The court absolved him not because of lack of evidence (it was, as you know, overwhelming) - but because Macri's own Foreign Ministry refused to pass on the court subpoenas for documents to the four countries in which Macri was found to have accounts (Bahamas, Brazil, Uruguay, and, of course, Panama).
The court therefore ruled a mistrial - and the prosecutor, Guillermo Marijuán (an Argentine Ken Starr of sorts), refused to appeal, thus closing the books on the case.
I understand something similar happened in a number of the other 81 countries with Papers-related probes.
That said, thank you for the update Hotler. This story risks being largely forgotten thanks to Big Media, and it's good to be reminded every so often.

(11,420 posts)info about investigations going on here in the States. There is one article, I have not looked deeper for others. Too much silence about corrupt fuckers in America.
Plus many of them keep their loot in Paul Singer's NML (Cayman Is.), rather than in Panama.
Ramón Fonseca said at the time he believed Paul Singer was behind the leak - and indeed, his NML probably benefited more than anyone from the dustup.
