Social media is designed to keep people there as long as possible through algorithms that provide them with clickbait the algorithm decides they're interested in, putting them into a feedback loop.

And, sadly, even people on DU who should know better still think they're in control.

I suppose I'll get used to it, add a few apps here or there, but then again, maybe not.

I was creeped out by FB's business plan from the beginning, so I avoided it.

I've found Ghostery to be helpful in removing trackers, beacons and the like. I set Foxfire to delete cookies, cache and history when I close it. I use Duck Duck Go or Smart Page as browsers, supposedly they use data for a day, then delete. My searches haven't been particularly limited by either, usually a good thing unless I have to wade through pages of right wing nonsense to find what I'm looking for.

I have a smart phone now, the dumb phone was AT&T and they suck. Text messages are all advertising but that's OK, I can't read them anyway.
