Quote for the Day:

Wives of members of the Twin Lakes [Wisconsin]school board had sat up nights to make the new textbooks, copies of William Holmes McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers of 1879, acceptable in the 1960s – by blotting out religious teachings that might violate the principle of separation of church and state. They had helped to bring the long-outdated McGuffeys back to the schoolroom, thereby complying with the sentiments of a majority of the board’s members. It was the majority’s feeling that the McGuffey Readers did more to foster such virtues as patriotism and self-reliance than any series currently available.
Revival of the McGuffeys was in conformity with the board’s new statement of “basic principles,” which required that “all materials used in our school will constantly be scrutinized in order to avoid indoctrination of our children in socialistic or communistic theories.” The statement adds, “Our children will become familiar with the basic documents in their country’s history, committing to memory its anthems and pledges, and through regular attention to these and to their meaning will develop an early love for their county.”

Donald Janson and Bernard Eismann. The Far Right. McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. (c) 1963
