Initial jobless claims unexpectedly drop in past week

• Initial jobless claims for the week ended Jan. 13 fell by 16K to 187K, compared with the 207K expected and 203K prior, which was revised from 202K. That represents the lowest level since Sept. 24, 2022, when initial jobless claims amounted to 182K.

• The four-week moving average was 203,250, a decrease of 4,750 from the prior week's revised average of 208,000.
• Continuing claims: 1.806M vs. 1.845M expected and 1.832M prior (revised from 1.834M).

• The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4% for the week ended Jan. 6, unchanged from the previous week's level, the Department of Labor said Thursday.

• Advance number of actual initial claims under state programs on an unadjusted basis were 289,228 in the week ended Jan. 13, a decrease of 29,543 from the prior week. Seasonal factors expected a decrease of 5,681 from the previous week.
