Lowe's lays off thousands of workers

Home improvement retailer Lowe's has told thousands of workers that their jobs are being eliminated.

The company plans to outsource jobs of maintenance and assembly workers to third-party companies. The assembly workers put together products such as wheelbarrows and grills.

"We are moving to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow Lowe's store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers. Associates who were in these positions will be given transition pay and have the opportunity to apply for open roles at Lowe's," the company said in a statement to CNBC.

News of the layoffs was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Good old out-sourcing.

And the laid off employees will be given in store openings.

Frankly I'd rather have someone experienced with tools doing assembly. When I managed a small auto shop I always sublet repairs we were not as skilled on. Auto transmission overhauls & A.C. were specialty areas & the professionals did a great job. And I made a decent profit just sending them a check.

Subletting is a good thing for the most part.

Home Depot can still suck my crannies. Refused a "lifetime warranty" on a $15.00 wrench. I got into a shouting match with the manager-had broken wrench with lifetime warranty in hand-they had same tool on shelf. Because they changed policies (right winger on fox dude)they would not honor a obvious & cheap warranty. I had a full rollaway, company credit line & about every hand tool they made at the time.

That move has cost them about 30K in my business as I have never set foot in the store since.

Dumb-really dumb.
