ST. PAUL - Its ironic. On Monday, Jan. 16, we will celebrate the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who spent a lifetime standing up for those things that many in this country are trying to destroy. King was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Following the 2010 elections, a coordinated campaign began that was designed to solve the continuing economic crisis in this state and country on the backs of public workers and all unions. This coordinated attack against public workers and unions is still alive in the GOP-controlled Minnesota Legislature.
The GOP legislative majority in our Legislature has set its sights on passing a "right to work" constitutional amendment that would undermine unions and weaken the best job security protections workers have: the union contract. There are 22 "right to work" states, with a battle being waged in Indiana by the GOP-controlled Legislature in that state and the GOP governor to be the next right-to-work state.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke out often on labor rights.
The single-minded purpose of "right to work" legislation is to keep unions out of the workplace.
King felt that everyone, black or white, should have equal rights. The right to a job and make an honest living, voter rights, the right to a good education and the right to use all public places.
King exposed the fraud of "right to work" legislation.
