Omaha fire contract called ‘meaningful reform’

Omaha City Council President Tom Mulligan called it “a major accomplishment.” Council member Chris Jerram described it as “substantial, meaningful reform.”

More than a year after the council took over the city's labor negotiations, its members voted 6-1 on Tuesday to approve a new labor contract with the city's fire union. The vote protects the agreement from a mayoral veto.

Mayor Jim Suttle's administration, from which the council has stripped labor bargaining rights, plans to address the contract directly for the first time during a press conference this morning.

Councilwoman Jean Stothert, head of the council negotiating committee that pursued the new contract, repeated her view that the council will seek more concessions from the fire union in the future.
