MSNBC's Ed Schultz paid $252,000 by unions in last two years

Ed Schultz, the MSNBC host who frequently champions union causes, was paid $252,000 by union groups between 2012 and 2013, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Those payments — which came from AFL-CIO electrical workers, postal workers, and others — were designated for either "political" or "representational" activities. Union auto workers alone paid Ed Schultz Broadcasting LLC a total of $72,000 in 2012.

In a statement to POLITICO, MSNBC spokesperson Lauren Skowronski said the payments were for advertisements on Schultz's radio show and website and for speaking engagements. She also said that all funds from speaking engagements were donated to charity, in keeping with company policy.

“Independent from MSNBC, Ed's radio show and website sell advertising to a variety of clients — both union and non-union," Skowronski said. "Also as previously noted, Ed has donated the honorarium from speaking engagements to charity, per network policy.”

Ed had the finest moments in Wisconsin when he alone went there to report on union busting by Gov. Scott Walker. I didn't think this was in a bad light for Ed at all.

Bill Press has union sponsors too. WIN is on Thom Hartmann etc.

The money was for ads on the website and radio show, and for speaking engagements. And all payments for speaking engagements were donated to charity.

Besides, who else is getting the word out about unions? Money well spent.

Now, let's compare his 250K in advertising revenue from unions over two years to the advertising revenue Fox gets from the Koch brothers. Probably millions a year.

According to one digital political ad buyer, the Politico home page typically is a premium placement and is often purchased by large corporations and trade groups hoping to reach Beltway decision-makers. Politico has some other high-profile advertisers on the site today, including Toyota, which is touting production of its 25th millionth vehicle in North America.

Bing wasn't the only big-spender on election day, typically huge for news organizations covering the election. Norfolk Southern, a freight railroad company with 30,000 employees, also bet on a big home-page takeover buy to get in front of the politically minded Tuesday. The 24-hour WashingtonPost.com campaign was part of an awareness effort targeting federal and state policy makers, along with other influential government types, according to Jacqui Hannigan, VP-media for RP3 agency, which handled the creative, media-planning, and media-buying work.

Norfolk's home-page takeover was part of a broader year-long deal with the Washington Post that was inked back in 2011, she said. The deal also included a home-page takeover ad on Super Tuesday. The overall campaign has been running since August and includes a TV ad that can be viewed by clicking on the WashingtonPost.com ad.

"A lot of the discourse that is aligned with the election is in line with what Norfolk Southern cares about: the economy and jobs and prosperity," she said. The campaign is also intended to emphasize the role that freight railroads play in the U.S. economy.

Other corporations tying their brands to the election Monday include Exxon Mobil, which was sponsoring CNN.com's Election Center and running ads on the National Journal home page, as well as United Healthcare, which was running on the NYTimes.com's Politics section home page.

He talks about our massive debt and all the government does is rearrange the chairs
on the Titanic. Then on his show he rants about the Republicans and their false claims about the debt.

i find it ironic that the people who listen to ed and hartman do`t have enough money to invest in gold.

if the gold investment firms want to waste their money let them.

He was very up front and honest about advertising money. He didn't talk about speaking fees, but I had heard before that he donated all fees.
Ed's been a good union voice, which is why the right tries so hard to discredit him.
