The Company Store Wants Your Soul Back

BY MICHAEL BOOKMAN | FEBRUARY 11, 2014

Congratulations, you got the job! Now pay us $2,500! Did you not receive your entire pay check? Oh well, too bad.

Something doesn't sound right, but if anti-worker politicians in Indiana have their way, this will be the harsh reality. Now making its way through the Indiana Capitol, House Bill 1126 and its supporters are looking turn back decades of progress.

Remember the company store? For most, it's a relic of days long past, where companies would force employees to pay for the right to work – uniforms, equipment and training necessary to the job. If passed, HB 1126 would allow an employer to charge an employee up to $2,500 annually for training and equipment necessary to the job. Picture a police officer forced to buy her own bulletproof vest and handcuffs. Envision an office worker paying his company to be retrained on new computer programs.
