Climate change predicted to halve coffee-growing area that supports 120m people

More than 120 million of the world’s poorest depend on the coffee
economy, a report says, and their livelihoods are already suffering
from temperature rises

Climate change is going to halve the area suitable for coffee production and impact the livelihoods of more than 120 million of the world’s poorest people who rely on the coffee economy, according to a new report by the Climate Institute, commissioned by Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand.

The report findings follow stark warnings by some of the world’s biggest coffee producers, including Starbucks and Lavazza, who have said climate change is posing a severe risk to the industry.

Climate change is already impacting coffee crops around the world, according to the report. In Tanzania, where 2.4 million people’s livelihoods rely on coffee, production has fallen by about 137kg per hectare for every 1C rise in the minimum temperature on farms. Overall there has been a 50% decline there since the 1960s.

Extreme temperatures and unusual high-altitude rains have also sparked costly waves of pests and disease through coffee farms. In 2012, coffee leaf rust affected half of the coffee across Central America – some producers in Guatemala lost up to 85% of their crop.

Currently tracking my calories at less than 1800 a day. Have only 1 cup of coffee a day, replying on tea mainly. Have 1 child and don't think anyone should have more.

I love good jokes but am too deadly serious about GW, to the point of being depressed.

I still find things to laugh about. Enjoy this one:

Donald Trump supporters are at a rally. The Don brags he is smarter than anyone and asks the host to pose a question to prove his tremendous brain power.

"O.K." says the host. "What is the square root of 25?"
The Don ponders and says "10"
"Wrong" the host replies
The audience screams, "GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE.GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE"

"O.K., a bit easier. You buy something for $19 and give the clerk a $20 bill. What change do you get back?"
The Don ponders deeper, counts his massive fingers , stares at the ceiling and says"$2.10"
"Sorry, wrong again"
Still the audience screams enough with more gusto, "GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE.GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE"

"Alright, what is 2 plus 2?" the exasperated host asks.
"AHA, I know that one--- FOUR" the Don says
And the audience screams, "GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE.GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE"
