Blinded By Smog, Shangdong Province Motorist Drives Off Pier; Rescued, But Car Sinks

A man escaped uninjured when his car plunged off a pier into the sea in eastern China on Monday after the driver became confused by poor visibility amid heavy smog. The accident occurred near a port in the coastal city of Weihai, Shandong province, early on Monday morning, the Qilu Evening News reported.

The driver, identified only by his surname Dong, was driving along a pier and could not figure out where to turn because thick smog had clouded visibility. He saw the headlights of an oncoming vehicle and he realised he was headed for a collision, the report said.

Judging it too late to manoeuvre out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, Dong slammed on his brakes. Because the road was slippery, his car did not come to a complete stop, but instead slid off the pier into the sea, the report said.

Dong managed to escape the sinking car through an open window and was quickly rescued by two nearby fishermen, the report said.

I'm gathering information for the next time I'm asked to go to China for business.
At some point, it may come down to choosing health over a job.
