Southeast Asia strategy aims to have companies generate their own electricity

OSAKA -- Sharp is shifting the strategy for its solar power business in Southeast Asia from big solar power plants to in-house generation systems for individual companies.
Instead of focusing on solar power stations to sell electricity, the Japanese electronics maker is now putting its marketing priority for the region on independent power systems to help businesses trim electricity bills.
With this shift, Sharp hopes to make its solar power business in the region less vulnerable to changes in the energy policies of local governments. As part of its sales efforts, the company is tapping a Japanese government subsidy program.
But Sharp's solar power business is struggling. Due partly to long-term contracts to buy silicon, the main material for solar panels, the company posted an operating loss in the segment for the April-December period of 2016.
