Trump slashes Great Lakes funding by 97 percent in early budget planBy Garret Ellison | gellison@mlive.com March 03, 2017
The White House is proposing to slash Environmental Protection Agency funding that pays for Great Lakes pollution cleanup by 97 percent, according to a budget document obtained by the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.
The potential cuts are part of President Donald Trump's initial 2018 budget proposal, detailed in a U.S. Office of Management and Budget "passback" to the EPA that outlines drastic cuts to an agency Trump has called a "job killer" and promised to reduce to "tidbits" as a candidate.
The proposal would virtually eliminate annual Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funding, slashing it from $300 million to $10 million among other cuts that would altogether reduce the EPA's total budget by a quarter.
The plan also includes a $13 million cut in compliance monitoring, which the EPA uses to ensure the safety of drinking water systems. State grants for beach water quality testing would also be eliminated.

(12,631 posts)It was a long time ago. Trump was busy grabbing pu**y in those days and doesn't remember. He thinks regulations were created because bureaucrats have nothing else to do and like to harass rich people.

(6,994 posts)If any Midwesterner especially Trump supporters think this will not affect our local lakes, rivers and reservoirs..well they better think again.
In Indiana we depend on Federal dollars to help keep our waterways clean, whereby the fish are safe to eat, and other water recreation is safe.
Do away with these funds and we will not have any fish fit to eat. Millions of Federal dollars was used to clean up much of Lake Michigan (that Im familiar with) and we still have a long way to go,but stop the funding and our waterways recreation as we know it is over.
There is a local reservoir that has gone through a Major clean up so that many fish species has now been reclassified as safe to eat.
The dry summers we had a couple years ago did not help with our waterways..
So what the fuck is the Trump Administration thinking.
..but yet in this solid Red State the Trump Supporters will probably say "its all about making America great again, but when there isn't any water at the bottom of that boat ramp ,tell me that again how great it is.

Also posted articles about "pipe line #5" and got a lot of support because if this one fails, the Great Lakes are gone. If you don't know about Pipe Line #5, Google it. The Little Travers Bay Ottawa tribe is suing to shut it down and need national support.

All those fantastic fishing lakes would be gone.
What in the hell and what do these Fascists expect to save the Taxpayers..it will actually cost us Millions.
Every day, nearly 23 million gallons of oil flow through two aging pipelines in the heart of the Great Lakes, just west of the Mackinac Bridge. Built in 1953 during the Eisenhower administration, the two 20-inch-in-diameter Line 5 pipelines owned by Canadian company Enbridge, Inc., lie exposed in the water at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac.
