(Reuters) - TransCanada Corp said on Friday it has recovered 44,400 gallons, or 1,057 barrels, of oil from the Keystone pipeline spill site at Amherst, South Dakota.
The company had shut down its 590,000 barrel-per-day Keystone pipeline, which links Albertas oil sands to U.S. refineries, on Nov. 16 after a 5,000-barrel spill. It has not yet set an expected restart date for the pipeline, which is one of Canadas main crude export pipelines.
Additional excavation will be conducted beyond Sunday for soil remediation purposes, the Calgary-based company said, adding, it has about 170 personnel round-the-clock on the site engaged in clean-up activities.
Preliminary inspections of the damaged section will be completed on site by both TransCanada and U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) staff, then sent to Washington, D.C., for an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Boards Metallurgical Laboratory, the company said.

(34,661 posts)181,00 gallons? 5000 x 45 gallons per barrel in Oil measure =225,00 gallons - 44,000 = 181,00. Nothing here to see,go away, yah right. Knowing the area, this crap is going to seep into the James River.

(34,661 posts)they miss some Crude, but usually pickup about eighty percent. But,it is after all South Dakota where they do not believe in asking a Corporation to please clean up your mess. Case in point, east of Brookings is a Toxic spill that has been in the clean up stage for more than a decade, and is in a sensitive Watershed area.
Usual Abatement is,soil removal and monitoring wells dug as a precaution with pumps for capture of any plume as it perks through the soil.
