PNW senators: Genetically engineered 'Frankenfish' must be labeled
A bipartisan group of ideological opposites in the U.S. Senate has introduced legislation that would require clear labeling of any genetically engineered salmon products marketed to the American public.
"There's a huge difference between Frankenfish and the wild, healthy sustainably caught, delicious real thing -- and I want to make sure folks are aware of that, and will not accept that this 'fake fish' will be sold in stores without clear labeling," said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska.
The Genetically Engineered Labeling Act would require that such salmon be labeled "genetically engineered."
The Food and Drug Administration, in November of 2015, approved the marketing of AquaAdvantage Salmon. The decision touched off protests from Murkowski, who chairs the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington.
They have enlisted Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, a down-the-line Trump supporter, and liberal Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon, a vociferous administration critic, as cosponsors.
Scientists engineer some salmon to grow faster than wild salmon or fish raised in salmon pens.
