(1,480 posts)It's been going on for a long time. In the 1970s, I was a member of the Sierra Club. They warned us hikers not to drink directly from mountain streams, but to use chlorine purification tablets.
Runoff from chemical fertilizers is another contributor to water contamination.

(60,010 posts)When Deepwater Horizon blew, BP used illegal chemical sprays that made the oil sink to the bottom of the Gulf, but denied the scope of use. The chemical, Corexit, is not what you want to eat with your shrimp.
In order to fool the tourists who visit the area, BP and the State hired "beach cleaners" to pick up globs of oil that came in on the tide, at the crack of dawn before people hit the beaches. They denied doing so, but photos were circulated of it happening.
there were no warning signs about oil or water contamination, and any complaints were treated as one off incidents.
Fish and shrimp caught in the Gulf continued to be sold.

I gave up eating Gulf shrimp.
Haven't been to Biloxi since they put the casinos on the beach. All I have now is wonderful memories of
"used to be".

(13,942 posts)I use to love running over to Everglades city in SW Fla to get fresh Florida "pinks" right off the boat. Very sweet but haven't been in years.. I wonder how far south the contamination has gone down to...
