Trump to Earth's wild creatures -- Go extinct
One of life's uplifting experiences, some years back, was flying over the San Juan Islands with Friday Harbor postmaster Charley Nash, as Nash undertook his annual "chick count" in the islands' bald eagles nests.
Nash was visibly worried, this being the mid-1970s, because the number of baby eagles was down, and a number of nests had shells but no chicks.
The population of America's national symbol would be restored, however, thanks to the 1973 Endangered Species Act and banning of the pesticide DDT. I can watch weekend squawk-offs between crows and young bald eagles from the porch in Whidbey.
Donald Trump has just gutted the tough federal law that made possible eagle recovery, and brought back the grizzly bear population in our Greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
A new rule, due to take effect in a month, closes off paths under the Endangered Species Act that have protected wildlife habitat from development.
It cuts in the face of a recent United Nations report warning that a half million of the Earth's species "have insufficient habitat for long term survival, and will go extinct unless habitat is restored." We're in the midst of the Earth's sixth great extinction crisis, one that is taking place in slow motion.
