Instead of a winter wonderland, residents living along the shore of Lake Erie in New York woke up this weekend to a winter nightmare when they found their homes completely encased in thick ice.
Ed Mis has lived in his home in Hamburg, New York, for the past eight years, and while the neighborhood has seen ice coatings before, he said this is the first time it's been this bad.
"It looks fake, it looks unreal," Mis told CNN. "It's dark on the inside of my house. It can be a little eerie, a little frightening."

(21,447 posts)but well into the lake, the bottom is very sandy. Gets churned up in stormy waters.
Usually, Lake Erie is a nice blue color, but it is shallow compared to the other Great Lakes, so it can change color, depending on the weather and what it reflects from sunny or cloudy skies. On clear, sunny days, it sparkles with sunlight bouncing off the blue waves. On days with heavy, stormy cloud cover, it turns a dull gray. Some fantastically beautiful sunsets in summer.
It's a moody lake.

(21,447 posts)from wind-driven sprays, the result is not a smooth, even coating.
I never experienced a house coated in ice, but did see it happen to my car once. Several years ago in Cleveland, but not from lake water. It was January and we had heavy rain followed by a sudden, rapid temperature drop, 20 degrees in an hour. Winds at 60 to 85 mph, one gust up to 110 mph with heavy snowfall.
Foolishly, when I woke up to this blizzard, I got dressed and went out to my car to go to work. It was totally encased in solid ice. Could not even feel the groove of the door handle. So, I fought the winds back to the door and stayed home, baking and watching the coverage on TV.
The wind was so strong that I could not open the door to my apt bldg. Had to signal my husband through a window to go to the door. He pushed while I pulled. Then, after I got inside, it took both of us pulling together to close it.
