Alive and boisterous': Endangered J pod welcomes second orca calf born this month

There's more good news for Puget Sound's whale watchers today: a new baby orca whale was born on Sept. 24, marking the second addition to the endangered J Pod this month.

The Center for Whale Research confirmed that J41 (also known as Eclipse) has given birth to a new calf off the coast of Victoria, B.C.

It's Eclipse's second addition to the pod, as she gave birth to her first calf, J51 (male), in 2015.

The sex of the newest calf is not known, but researchers hope to get a closer look at the new pair soon. They are also holding off on giving the new calf an alpha-numerical designation, as approximately 40% of newborn calves do not survive their neonatal first few weeks.
