A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that "Electric cars produce lower global warming emissions and cost significantly less to fuel than the average compact gasoline-powered vehicle."

I saw this topic brought up in another thread, one member felt like electric vehicles fare worse than gasoline fueled vehicles. This study does a good job of laying that myth bare.
Also, one of the problems with electrics is cost. I just did a quick search and found that Mitsubishi has an electric car out with a range of 62 miles which will cost around $21K after the clean energy tax credit. That's getting into the ballpark.

I suppose there are those (i.e., idiots) who might argue otherwise.
Nice to see some science on the topic. Although there are those who will deny that, too.

(10,898 posts)...don't just focus on the selling price.
You have to take into consideration the cost of fuel and maintenance as well as resale value. Electric cars may cost more, but they historically have had a higher resale value. When all these are considered, the costs are surprisingly close.
On top of that, you also have to consider environmental impact and who gets your fuel dollars - a multinational oil company and the Middle East or an American power company?

Boulder Electric Vehicle is opening an assembly plant in Chatsworth
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa scored another notch in his green belt, announcing Monday that a Colorado electrical vehicle maker will locate an assembly plant in Chatsworth.
Boulder Electric Vehicle leased a 27,714-square-foot building last month and has already started tooling it up for an assembly facility, Boulder CEO Carter Brown said.
The company will initially hire 30 people. Employment could reach up to 150 people at full production, turning out 1,000 vehicles a year.
Brown said the assembly plant jobs will pay between $15 to $30 per hour.
