Manchin's Dirty Deal Returns

The zombie lurches on.

POWHR (Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights) has been fighting the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Today, they said
"We had a brief window of celebration on Tuesday night when YOUR advocacy helped block Senator Manchin's Dirty Deal from being added to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in the US House of Representatives. We awoke on Wednesday to news that Senator Manchin has reintroduced an even nastier version of the Dirty Deal as a potential amendment to the NDAA on the Senate side. The Dirty Deal still includes forced completion and operation of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, amongst other deregulations and harms to frontline and environmental justice communities." (emphasis theirs)

An organizer for POWHR states:
“ As a working-class, single-mother in Appalachia, I’ve been let down by a lot of politicians but few of them have made me this furious; he is dragging us through the mud for nothing but his own greed and vanity. We’ve got enough to set right around here. Sit down and zip it, Manchin.” (emphasis mine)

Manchin, a fossil baron, has been exploiting his unique negotiating position to fight non-stop for a pipeline traversing West Virginia and Virginia, riding roughshod over property owners and natural areas. It will move fossil gas to a port, so that a few people can get even wealthier selling US resources overseas. Need I mention what a climate catastrophe this would be?

The text of the bill is here:

More legalize than I'm capable of digesting offhand. I suspect a lot of the true purposes are hidden in the language, for instance, in the funding for FERC staff. Sounds like regulatory capture, enabling future fossil projects to move faster than citizens' organizing.

POWHR provides phone numbers and talking points.

FIRST: Call your Senator (connects automatically): 888-997-5380

Call Script: “Hi, my name is ____, & I live in ____. As your constituent/someone concerned about MVP and environmental justice, I’m urging you to vote NO on any amendment or must-pass legislation that advances Manchin's Dirty Permitting Deal. I'm deeply concerned about any legislation that would fast-track fossil fuel projects, force completion of the MVP, weaken environmental protections and undermine our ability to give input on new energy projects.”
