I wonder how they track 'small scale solar'? I assume that's anything less than a field full of PV panels. When I installed my system, is it added to a publicly available amount kept by the local utility?

Good morning with good news: US solar capacity skyrockets in next 12 months by ~41 GWs, according to EIA's latest data! That's a record amount built in 12 months. Utility scale capacity jumps from 73 GW to 107 GW & small scale solar adds at least 7 GWs.

(73,327 posts)if youre plugged into the grid, your elec provider has tallied that up.
in illinois, the state gives u a credit based on capacity, so they track it too.
theres permits, too.

(73,327 posts)they track factory output, for 1 thing. but i think most ppl get some sort of incentive.

(73,327 posts)there was a report the other day that there was enough domestic capacity to meet 2030 goals. iirc they said orders were also on track.

(1,161 posts)So they know it's 4000wp. They also know how much I over produced but they have to guess on how much the system produced.
I guess they could look at past history of my usage prior to installation and infer how much it produced.
My point is that solar is producing more than they can measure.

(73,327 posts)they see how much of their juice i use, and how much i feed back. but how much of i produce and use myself, they dont know. i do have an app that tells me.
and im getting another system for a rental, and the co will monitor my production, cuz i have a guarantee.
i didnt mean to imply that theres a full time metering going on.
