Solar generates more energy in US than coal for first time

Solar generates more energy in US than coal for first time

Solar supplied 12.8% of US electricity in May even as Trump boosts coal over clean energy

Associated Press/The Guardian | Thu 11 Jun 2026

Even as Donald Trump boosts coal over clean energy, solar power is hitting new milestones in the US and remains the leading source of new power.

Data released on Wednesday by the global energy thinktank Ember, along with a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (Seia) and analytics firm Wood Mackenzie, show the continued growth of solar and decline of coal in the United States despite federal policy. In May, for the first time, solar supplied more of the nation’s electricity than coal, or 12.8%, Ember said. Coal supplied 12.2%, its fourth-lowest monthly share ever.

“For years solar power has risen in the US electricity mix,” said Nicolas Fulghum, senior energy and data analyst at Ember. “At the same time, coal power has lost its status, first as the largest source in the US mix, and then gradually over the years has fallen even further.”

Solar also became the third-largest source of electricity in the US in May, behind natural gas and nuclear, Fulghum said. Coal generation hit an all-time monthly low in April and rebounded only modestly in May, allowing increasing solar generation to overtake coal, he added...more

The solar industry requires redundancy, which is expensive and unsustainable. There is the normal illiterate and wasteful enthusiasm for unsustainable and expensive redundancy, unsustainable batteries, and worse, hydrogen - the latter a front for fossil fuels.

They still burn coal in Germany.

They don't in France and haven't for decades.

France eliminated the use of coal. The Germans embraced coal and gas:

Germany says new gas power plants will be online by 2031 following EU deal

The Germans of course, could make their gas dependence worse by wasting gas to make hydrogen for a marketing scam.

The trivial, expensive, and extremely damaging solar industry is lipstick on the fossil fuel pig. It has been useless, if we define, as I do, "useful" eliminating fossil fuels.

Here's the solar reality:

Um...um...um...

It's garbage.

Today I saw a defender of this garbage post obscene pictures of floating solar cells. Those will fail on an even worse scale as all is required to destroy them is heavy seas.

Are you serious?

Are you going to keep posting those photos again and again? Shall I repost the Fukushima plant explosion videos repeatedly?

Here's the nuclear reality:

When solar farms are occasionally destroyed by storms, they can be cleaned up and rebuilt, as one of your linked articles describes. While the pictures of such destruction may delight deluded nuclear zealots, no radioactive exclusion zones were created. No fallout clouds or increased cancer rates, population evacuation and long term displacement, and much less fear and stress on area residents.
